Species Profile: Ram Cichlids (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi)

Hey fish friends! I'm starting this series with the Ram Cichlid because one of the Rams laid eggs on Sunday. Witnessing the breeding process and watching the fry grow is always a thrill.

The Ram Cichlid (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is an excellent addition to any freshwater aquarium and a favorite among beginner and experienced hobbyists. There are four main types of Rams. They are: Bolivian Ram, Electric Blue Ram, German Blue Ram, and Golden Ram

First, let's talk about water parameters. The Ram Cichlid prefers water between 78-82 degrees Fahrenheit with a pH between 6.0-7.0. They also like water slightly on the softer side, with a general hardness of around 4-8 dGH.

Regarding tank size, the Ram Cichlid is a small fish that can reach a maximum length of around 2.5 inches. Therefore, a minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for one adult Ram Cichlid, with an additional 10 gallons for each extra ram.

As for diet, the Ram Cichlid is an omnivore and will thrive on a diet of small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. They also enjoy eating small pellets, flakes, and fresh vegetables. Supplementing their diet with various food sources ensures they get all the necessary nutrients.

Regarding breeding, the Ram Cichlid is a relatively easy fish to breed in captivity. They prefer water around 80 degrees Fahrenheit and a pH between 6.0-7.0, and they will lay eggs on flat surfaces such as leaves or rocks. Once the eggs have been laid, the parents should be removed from the tank to prevent them from eating them. The eggs will hatch in about 3-4 days, and the fry should be fed small live or frozen foods.

Tank mates for the Ram Cichlid include other temperate fish species such as tetras, barbs, and danios. They also make great tank mates for different types of small cichlids. It's important to avoid keeping them with aggressive fish or fish that are too large, as they may be bullied or eaten.
