How to choose an aquarium heater
Match wattage to tank size
Larger tanks and cooler rooms need more wattage. Heater packaging lists the tank sizes it is meant for, and we can help you choose.
Use a separate thermometer
Do not trust a heater's setting alone. A thermometer in the tank tells you the real temperature.
Know your fish
Most tropical fish want warm, stable water, while goldfish and some other species prefer cooler water and do not need a heater.

Common questions
Do all aquariums need heaters?
No. Tropical fish usually need one in most homes. Goldfish and some other species do not. Tell us what you keep.
Can I use two heaters in a large tank?
Many keepers use two smaller heaters at opposite ends of a large tank for more even heating and a backup if one fails.
Not sure what fits your tank?
Bring your tank size and what you keep in it, and we will help you choose.
