Aquarium Lighting

The right light makes fish colors pop and plants grow. The wrong amount invites algae. Browse our lights, then ask us what your plants need.

How to choose aquarium lighting

Start with your plants

Low-light plants such as anubias and java fern do fine under modest lighting. Stem plants and carpeting plants need stronger light and usually fertilizer to go with it.

Control the schedule

A timer keeps the light consistent, which helps both plants and algae control. Many planted tanks start around 6 to 8 hours a day and adjust from there.

More light is not always better

Too much light without matching nutrients and CO2 is a common cause of algae. Increase light gradually and watch how the tank responds.

Common questions

Do my fish need a light?

Fish do best with a regular day and night cycle, and a light on a timer helps provide that. Live plants need it to grow.

Why do I have algae even with a light timer?

Algae usually means light, nutrients, and plant growth are out of balance. Reducing light, cleaning up waste, and adding fast-growing plants often help.
