Choosing safe hardscape
Choose aquarium-safe materials
Not every wood or rock is safe for an aquarium. Some rock can change water chemistry, and some wood can rot or leach unwanted substances. Our guides cover what helps and what hurts.
Expect some tannins from wood
Driftwood often tints the water brown at first. This is usually harmless for fish and some species like it. Soaking or boiling before use can reduce it.
Plan for hiding places
Caves and wood give shy fish and bottom dwellers places to retreat, which reduces stress.

Common questions
Can I use rocks I find outside?
It is risky. Rocks can alter water chemistry or carry contaminants. Our rock guide explains what to look for, and buying aquarium-safe rock is the simpler path.
Why is my driftwood turning the water brown?
Tannins released by the wood tint the water. They are usually harmless and fade with water changes and soaking.
