Aquarium Substrate

Substrate shapes how your tank looks and how your plants and bottom dwellers do. Browse sand, gravel, and planted tank substrates, then ask us what fits your livestock.

How to choose aquarium substrate

Think about your fish first

Corydoras, loaches, and other bottom dwellers do best on smooth sand or rounded gravel that will not damage their barbels and bodies.

Plants change the plan

Rooted plants benefit from a nutrient-rich planted substrate or from root tabs added under the plants. Plants that attach to wood and rock do not need special substrate.

Plan the amount

The depth you want and the footprint of your tank decide how much you need. Ask us for help with the math before you buy.

Common questions

Do I need special substrate for live plants?

Not always. Plants that attach to wood or rock need none. Rooted plants do better with a planted substrate or root tabs.

Can I mix sand and gravel?

You can, but they tend to separate over time. Many keepers choose one or use sand around a hardscape area.

Not sure what fits your tank?

Bring your tank size and what you keep in it, and we will help you choose.
